Opportunity to Attend/Volunteer at Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events

Hello 40 Belowers,

We wanted to let you know about some events being organized for MLK Jr. Day. Jan. 18th, in Cortland, NY. We have arranged volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity and Northwoods Rehabilitation Center, the YWCA is hosting a luncheon and speaker, and we are hosting a community conversation that all individuals and groups are welcome to join. Below is the schedule so far. The only event that may change is the children's art activity may be moved to the morning.

40 Below members are invited to join in any part of the day's events, especially the community conversation in the evening.

9-11:30 AM
I. Habitat for Humanity is starting some construction work at 33 Arthur Ave, Cortland - volunteers needed
II. Volunteering at Northwoods Rehabilitation Center - volunteers needed

11:45-12:15 AM
Free soup and bread luncheon at the YWCA - volunteers needed for clean-up
12:20am-1:00pm
Marsha Weissman from Syracuse's Community Alternatives to Incarceration organization will speak about the disproportionate number of people of color housed in our prison system, especially in light of the historic struggle by Dr. King for equality at the YWCA. Followed by a Q&A.

3:00/4:00-6:00/7:00 PM
I. Local groups and individuals will meet at the Beard Building to have a Community Conversation and to discuss plans for 2010 to realize social justice in our Cortland Community - need to get more groups and individuals to commit to attending.
II. Sheila Cohen and Chad Hovey will run an educational/artistic activity for children at the Beard Building, creating something to display at the Beard Building Gallery until February - volunteers needed to supervise children and children needed to attend

Please, pass this information to anyone who will be in Cortland on Monday, Jan. 18th. Contact me if you would like more information, have any questions, or would like to volunteer or attend.

Cheers much,
