National PARK(ing) Day

This Friday, September 21st, 40 Below's Public Arts Task Force will be participating in National PARK(ing) Day. PARK(ing) is performance art that utilizes juxtaposition to make us re-think how we use space in our cities. The Public Arts Task Force will rent a parking spot Downtown for the two hour duration. However, instead of using the space to store a car, our PARK(ing) spot will contain grass, trees, shrubs, and a sitting space. We will convert the asphalt and concrete into an urban oasis.
This is part of the second annual National PARK(ing) Day, which is drawing interest from public space advocates across the county. Boston, New York City, Miami, San Diego and Seattle are five of the thirty cities across the county that have signed up for the event, and more are likely to participate.
We will be installing our PARK(ing) spot at 7:30AM Friday on the 300 Block of South Salina Street. The installation will move to a new spot at 9:30AM, 11:30AM, 1:30PM and 3:30PM in accordance with local parking laws. While our installation is mobile, we intend to remain on the 300 Block of South Salina Street throughout the day. The installation will be dismantled at 5:30PM and will be reconstructed in front of The Gear Factory (200 South Geddes Street) at 6PM. A celebration of the installation will occur there for all the volunteers who assisted on the project throughout the day.
The Public Arts Task Force encourages everyone to stop by our PARK(ing) installation. Relax and bring a book during lunch. Enjoy the shade and grass, but most importantly please take a serious look at how we use the space of our public right-of-way.
